六 研究方法与本书结构
本书首先在对文献资料进行分析的基础上，对70年代美国大学教师发展的理论进行总结，分析这些理论的内容、对大学教师发展内涵的认识、对于内涵间关系的界定、提出的模型等，完成理论分析部分。其次，对于70年代大学教师发展的实践情况进行归纳分析，具体包括大学教师发展机构的情况（组织层级、组织架构）、发展项目的情况（目标、内容、措施和评估等），完成历史分析部分。再次，本书选取案例学校进行分析，分析其教师发展的理念与目标、机构层级与架构、项目制订与实施等内容，完成案例分析部分，并在综合前文研究的基础之上，探讨70年代美国大学教师发展的模式。最后，思考与探寻70年代美国大学教师发展的理论与实践对中国当前高等教育发展的启示与借鉴。
研究方法方面，本书主要采用文献分析法和案例分析法。文献分析法是本书收集资料的基本方法。支撑本书的文献主要有以下三类：一是美国大学教师发展理论的专著、学位论文与学术期刊论文等文献；二是美国大学教师发展历史文献，主要来源于美国大学图书馆、学会的资料数据、网络资料等；三是大学教师发展案例研究的文献，主要来源于学会的调研报告和学术论文等。本书在两个层面上使用案例分析法，第一是用部分性案例证明某个观点或部分情况，这种情况在行文中较为多见；第二是用整体性案例证明整体情况。
本书由绪论、正文、结论与启示三部分构成。
绪论部分主要介绍选题背景、问题的提出、研究目的、研究意义、研究思路与方法、文献综述和概念界定等。
正文部分包含六章。第一章是70年代美国大学教师发展的背景。综合分析70年代美国大学教师发展面临的政治背景、经济背景与社会背景，当时高等教育发展的状况和遇到的困境，以及原有的高等教育体制与机制是如何应对的，从而分析大学教师发展在此时被普遍应用的必然性与重要性；分析70年代之前大学教师发展方面的实践探索，并对此过程进行细致的归纳、分析和总结。
第二章为大学教师发展的理论与模型。由于缺乏直接的理论研究与指导，70年代美国大学教师发展多是从其他相关领域和学科借鉴成果，主要包含心理学、社会学、成人发展理论等方面。本章将首先探寻和总结70年代教师发展遇到哪些主要问题，教师发展是如何从其他学科和领域寻找解释的，有哪些影响教师发展的关键性研究，等等。其次，本章将梳理和归纳70年代教师发展的主要模型，分析不同模型所反映的共性因素与差异性。
第三章到第五章是对大学教师发展主要内容的分析，第三章为教学发展，第四章主要聚焦于组织发展，第五章为个人发展和学术研究发展。对于教师发展的主要内容的分析，是一个理论、模型和历史实践相互结合的过程。本书会分析其产生的背景、必要性和解决的主要问题；从教师发展的相关理论和模型中研究教师发展的实施应当具备的关键要素；在对大量历史资料的分析与整理的基础上归纳该领域教师发展的主要内容、具体项目措施；并对其效果与影响方面做客观的分析。
第六章主要研究大学教师发展是如何组织实施和评估的。本章将首先从组织者、组织类型、组织的特点等方面归纳与总结美国大学教师发展的组织与实施方式，并对每一种方式的优势、劣势和适用性进行分析；其次，随着大学教师发展的进行，针对发展项目有效性的评估日渐引起人们的关注，本章的第二部分将研究70年代主要使用何种指标、何种方式对大学教师发展进行评估。
第七章为结论与启示。在综合前文的基础上，对70年代美国大学教师发展的实践进行总结，归纳其基本特征与模式。历史的最终目的不是知晓过去，而是理解现在，本书最后将有针对性地提出对我国高等教育发展的建议。
